I cannot believe it... today, 12/13/19, I have been alive for TWO decades! My 19th year was oh soooo good to me.
"Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well." - Theodore Roosevelt
This is a quote I read at the beginning of 2019 in my public speaking class and it has really stuck with me. Life is hard sometimes, but how you deal with the bad is what determines the good. These are a (few) of the things I have learned this past year:
1. It is okay to be homesick.
I miss my parents, siblings, and the lifestyle I live when I am home. I miss the smell of my house, my mom cooking me dinner, playing cards with my dad, going to the movies with Meals. But also just the little things.. like putting on my dads socks, how loud my house is when all four Howard kids are home,
2. Fall in love with yourself first.
I fell in love this year. With myself, my life, the world, a guy I shouldn't have, and many, many other things. I am a lover, not a fighter. I love people and things I probably shouldn't, and I am learning that it is OKAY!
3. Embrace your freedom.
Everyone says you only get one chance at being young. I love being young. I love being independent. I have felt more free this year than I ever have in my entire life.
4. I tell way too many people sorry way too often. I still need to work on it, but I have finally realized that I don't owe anyone an apology for being ME.
5. Cut off toxic people.
Just because someone is family doesn't mean they aren't toxic.
6. Figure out what makes you feel alive and do it often.
7. It is okay to cry.
I am not really an overly emotional person, but I have come to realize that it is okay when I am hurt, sad, or just need a good cry. It really does make you feel better.
8. Take better care of your health.
9. Find your people. Love them hard.
10. Cut your hair, it's dead.
11. Something's gotta give.
You cannot burn a candle from both ends. Take a day off, take a nap, go for a run, clear your head, and then go about getting done what needs done.
12. It is okay to skip class.
As long as you don't make a habit of it and still get everything done on time, it is definitely okay to allow yourself to skip once or twice. My overall health is more important than sitting through a 2.5 hour class.
13. Stop looking at the negative and be POSITIVE.
I hate negative minded people. Learn to turn lemons into lemonade. Life is sweeter when you add more sugar.
14. Pay attention to how you are feeling.
Sleep when you need to sleep, eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored.
15. Write down your thoughts.
Write in a journal everyday. I need to be better at this.
16. Call your grandparents.
I love calling my grandparents. They are always soooooo excited to hear from me and always tell me how proud of me they are. It truly makes a difference in my life.
17. Allow yourself to move on.
Back to the toxic people. Cut them out of your life and let yourself process, and move on. I learned this the hard way.
18. College is HARD WORK.
Enough said lol
19. It is okay to not know who you are as long as you believe in yourself.
Some mornings my feet hit the floor and I know exactly who I am and what I want to be, and other days I am crying in the library at 2 AM and I tell myself that I am ready to drop out of college. Believe in yourself. It always gets easier.
